Celebrating Book Week

August24

Book Week runs from the 18th – 24th August. It is Australia’s longest running children’s festival and has been happening since 1945. Each year, many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating Australian authors and illustrators. This year the theme is Champions Read. On Thursday we had a dress up day. Students had the choice to either come dressed as a champion or a character from a book. Check out our fantastic costumes below:

We have been reading many of the books nominated for Picture Book of the Year. The 2012 winners have been announced. The winner is A bus called Heaven by Bob Graham. There are also two honour books and these are Flood by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley and The Dream of the Thylacine by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. We recommend you read these fantastic books.

    Hi 2/3D

My favourite book is “The Crystal Cave” by Mary Stewart. The novel is a retelling of the story of King Arthur and Merlin. The novel is set in Britain just after the departure of the Romans. Merlin is just 6 and begins to develop his magical powers. It is the first of three books that describe how Merlin guides Arthur to become a great King.

    Hi 2/3D

One of my favourite books is To Kill a Mockingbird. My favourite author is Jane Austen – I have read all her novels and enjoyed them immensely especially ‘Emma’.

Atticus, the main character in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ was a champion. As a lawyer he defended an African American when no-one else would because he believed that we are all created equal no matter what the colour of our skin is and everyone deserves a fair trial.

Book Week… this was a favourite of mine when I was at school. Looks like you guys had lots of fun this year and the outfits look amazing. The stories you have been reading sound really good. I must get down to my local library in the school holidays and have a look at the ones you have recommended. Isn’t reading fun ? It allows you to go to all sorts of wonderful places. I hope you all continue reading and exploring the wonderful world of writing and reading. Maybe one day I will be reading a story you have written and published – I will look forward to that !

So kids dont ever stop! I usually read books on design, gardens and fire departments. Great video clip! You all look like you are having a ball and I noticed you had a visitor from the Fire Department. I’m very jealous, wish I could’ve been there too!
